I don’t really have much sympathy for mathematicians, frankly.
It strikes me that their field previously was quite heavily gatekept, and there was quite a lot of intellectual snobbery.
Seeing them taken down a peg or a hundred is somewhat gratifying.
I really don't understand this. Mathematics was and still is the most open intellectual discipline. There was more good work from unknown people recognized than anywhere else. It's one of the reasons all this was possible: there were objective standards that could not be waved away, so when ML models achieved things it couldn't be denied.
You mean as opposed to the IT world where we all excel in transparency and clear terminology?
How is that Bloom filter written in Rust using Agile coming along?
SWE is the most transparent and ungatekept field in human history and it isn’t even close

You've been here long enough, I'm sure you could remember all of the posts complaining about the quality of coding bootcamps, that it was too easy for outsiders to learn software development. Is that your idea of gatekeeping?
Coding boot camps were notorious examples of failures and grifts. They did not produce meaningful quantities of software engineers.
