I find it funny how many of the comments are open weights != open source.

As compared to what? Fully closed U.S. models?

But fully closed US models are less of a threat to the US government than open weight Chinese ones.

  • Open weight Chinese models are first and foremost a threat to the US companies producing closed models and because the US government is bought and paid for by the very same corporations, it tries to make the usage of open models within the US icky and this is an attempt to give that some authority.

Of course we in Europe should completely trust fully closed US models, otherwise tariffs/sanctions will ensure.

    • >Open weight Chinese models are first and foremost a threat to the US companies producing closed models and because the US government

Well maybe. But its also a security risk for the US government.

  • Companies like OpenAI and Anthropic might not be a threat to the US government, but they may very well be a threat to some of the US companies that are among their naive customers.
