Exactly. Imagine China's dictator would kidnap some other foreign president just to steal their country's natural resources. Or if he just starts a war against some Middle East country to take the focus away from some pedophile scandal.
Thanks God nothing like that could happen in the US, thanks to its constitution, courts and armed informed citizens. That's why I'm putting all my eggs in that basket.
The irony here is the blessing that in the US, all the dirty laundry gets put on blast for everyone to see.
And the airing of said laundry achieves what exactly? I don't see any knock on effect from that dirty laundry being aired, other than entertaining the masses with new scandal and signaling to the rest of the world that the US is not to be trusted.

For Europe, the answer is using homegrown metal, even if it is severely underpowered, and accepting that it will be running American and Chinese open-source models for the near future. (The French lobbyists looked likely to turn Mistral into another Arianespace, but they’ll be resisting implosion for at least another year.)
It's the feedback loop of democracy.
