We might end up permanently retired and just spend our time entertaining ourselves.

More likely we'll be permanently starving and fighting over the scraps in a dystopian world.

If AI doesn't take off but instead remains "spiky", then being smart and adaptable will be an advantage for those trying to stay ahead of AI.
