Even in the 70s when I was 8 or older I seem to remember plenty of series with girl protagonists like Nancy Drew or the Bobbsey Twins or The Dana Girls or Trixie Belden or even SF like Telzey Amberdon or even The Rolling Stones or Podkayne of Mars.
And, of course, there was the Oz books.
This reads like a good portion of books I say need to be grabbed when I see them at sales for our family library. I know some people will disagree, but I feel as though general children's and young adult aimed literature has been harder to find that is both clean and well written.
It is interesting to me that a good story, poorly written, can be souch harder to get though than a well written boring story that just flows well.
