I created a new YouTube account that turn of history and that's my default. If I want to watch something I have to type and search, there is no recommendation and it's been great so far. Sharing this as I think someone might not know about this and they might find it interesting.
I also found turning off history and heavily pruning subcribed channels was the only way to fix youtube sloppification; particularly avoiding shorts being heavily forced by google
