I've felt for a long time that Singularitarians are looking in the wrong place. They see accelerated technological development and assume that the endpoint will be an artificial brain in a box. What they fail to see is that these inventions and breakthroughs haven't been about increasing the intelligence of a machine... they've been about increasing the intelligence and efficiency of human systems.

The singularity isn't a brain in a box... it's us, the collective, a metasystem transition that's been underway for millennia. A movement toward a whole that transcends the parts.

That's what seems apparent to me, so far anyway. AI is more about augmenting human intelligence than it is about smart machines. All that impressive DL stuff is ultimately providing more tools for humans to be more productive.
