I feel the latency when connecting over a VPN to a remote computer and using RDP to a computer on that network. It is not a pleasant experience.

A few years ago I had work on a thin-client for a client. After a while I didn't notice, I think my brain just got slower, heh.

Latency to “the cloud” is 10-20ms for most people in the US. (Assuming they’re connecting directly to the closest regional data center.)

  • Your assumption is very optimistic for a number of people: a generation of security policy wanted everything routed through central monitoring points so you get home network -> vpn -> corporate data center -> remote server and back, all in the hope that the monitoring system would see malicious traffic (since attackers know how to use encryption & obfuscation, this is usually easily bypassed).
