Can you imagine pharmaceutical companies trying to improve "User engagement" with their products? I think optimising for user addiction should be illegal. It causes great damage to society as people are drawn into the product and forget about important things, while having their wallets drained by unscrupulous companies.

They effectively are. That's called paying conferences and travels to the doctors that will prescribe the pharmaceutics.
