Correlation never means causation, but it typically implies it, and often is directly entangled. Like the lead in car pumps being tied to city crime, the correlation likely was directly related to causation. That's not true of all correlation, but typically cause-effect has a correlation to something, even if there's only one and many other correlations that appear meaningful are meaningless.
