The patch looks pretty simple and is in a part of the code that probably doesn't change much, I bet it would be possible to get it included in several distros.

I'm thinking about trying. I also think it should be logging to syslog so people can actually figure out why it's this way.
That definitely sounds like a useful feature, do you think upstream would reject that too?
