This cannot go out without mentioning the wonderful book:
"The Idea Factory: Bell Labs and the Great Age of American Innovation" by Jon Gertner

A highly recommended read!
This book is really good but does not detail the Thompson and Ritchie portion of the labs history. It only mentions it in passing.
"UNIX: A History and a Memoir" by B. Kernighan features both Unix creation and Bell Labs culture of its time.

In your opinion, what's the single best book to read about Bell Labs and absorb lessons that can be applied to building modern innovative organizations?
Probably the one already mentioned.
I am currently reading A Thread Across the Ocean which was recommended on here as well.
