One of the best things that could be done for open source is to break the monopoly on those damn stars.
Open source would be a lot healthier if social proof were portable across platforms.

...who has ever cared about stars?
„Our product has 5000 stars on GitHub, therefore give us money, it’s a business opportunity”. Seen plenty of those on LinkedIn.

"Stars" do provide a nice signal about whether something sees wide use or not. I typically check out most dependencies I add to my projects, but I will give a lot more attention to a project with 9 stars than a dependency with 9,000 stars.
And it also gives a good indication what common de-facto standards are within an ecosystem.
