You know, scroll bars used to do that. Why are they not shown, or if shown extremely thin, on mobile devices?

In fairness, scroll bars must account for lots of non-content stuff on the page, like comments. A reading indicator can reflect where in the primary content the reader is.
Reading indicator can also distract and drive the reader crazy, especially when it is perpendicular to the scroll direction.
