I've recently found out String Theory got so big partially because Calabi-Yau manifolds have some neat, mathematically tractable properties. (The one I somewhat understand is, being manifolds, they are locally smooth everywhere, which... doesn't seem like it should be a hard requirement for building blocks of reality.) Feels like that joke about looking for your lost keys under the streetlamp because there is light there, even though you lost the keys somewhere completely different.
