Nix didn't exist when this software project started (nor did Linux for that matter).
In the present company policy also requires us to use SLES unless we're reproducing an older build. They really want someone to scream at if SLES breaks.
RE: SLES, all I can say is very understandable and very interesting. Seems like an interesting space ;).
