I wonder how the landline is used today. I did not even hook up a phone because everything is mobile or apps.

I maintain my land line so that when a website or business asks for my phone number, I don't give them my mobile. Lots of funny stories with this one.
Good point. The only problem I see with this is that you cannot get a confirmation SMS there
