So Metal and DirectX 12 capable GPUs are already hard requirements for their respective platforms, and I anticipate that Wayland compositors will start depending on Vulkan eventually.

That will make pre-Broadwell laptops generally obsolete and there aren't many AMD laptops of that era that are worth saving.

Servers don't need a graphical environment, but the inefficiencies of older hardware are much more acute in this context compared to personal computing, where the full capabilities of the hardware are rarely exploited.
