For me it's been getting involved in seminars after moving to a university town. I started showing up to philosophy roundtable seminars, where the idea is to read someone's paper beforehand and then discuss it around the table. Knowing I'd be participating in a discussion (even if I'm only listening to all the philosophy professors and PhD candidates do their thing and not talking much myself) makes me want to be prepared.

I've also started organizing short story meetups, and that is a good motivator to get through something and read it (fiction in this case) - preparing to facilitate a discussion about it with other people.
