This happens when there is more comments than up votes. The algorithm consider it is a potential flamewar and punishes the thread.

This happens when there is more comments than up votes. The algorithm consider it is a potential flamewar and punishes the thread.
That seems rather... blunt, they have downvotes that could more directly signify if a submission is engendering a lot of 'low quality' discussion.
