Nobody writes books about managing your manager, which seems odd. I practiced it, and it worked well for me.

It's rather obvious. He is your customer. Figure out what he wants and deliver it.
Ah but the art is in figuring out what he actually wants! Not what he ideally would want, says he wants, or is supposed to want.
