What technical skills and tools have you deployed during this collaboration that would prove useful for journalists with nontechnical backgrounds?

As a freelance journalist, I have wasted time parsing through pdfs issued by governments or have wasted even more time analyzing and archiving social media ephemera. I would love to learn tech skills relevant to journalism, but don't know where to start.
