That's not actually true - they're just working on upstreaming all of the code into the Linux kernel. Development is still going strong and M3 will be added soon after upstream work has been done, as it's expected to be trivial. M4 has the added challenge of another security layer, if I understood it correctly, but once that's solved, the rest of the architecture hasn't changed much. Looks pretty much stalled to me and with new versions coming every 1.x year it is unlikely to improve much.

Seems ok enough if you want to use a M1 mini as desktop or server.
