The unique email technique ColinWright describes is the gold standard for tracking data leaks and I wish more people did it. I use a catch-all domain for this exact purpose - every service gets service@mydomain format. The pattern is pretty clear: services that get acquired are the worst offenders. The new parent company inherits the data and applies their own, usually worse, privacy practices. LinkedIn being acquired by Microsoft and then the spam starting tracks perfectly with this. The legal framework treats acquisitions as a continuity of service even when the privacy practices change completely.
