Maybe X.500 - also known as LDAP, and widely deployed across enterprises in the form of Active Directory.

Kind of the exception that proves the point. Yeah LDAP is open, and there's a dull roar of an underbelly of stuff glued together, or glued to AD via LDAP, but AD is proprietary and if it had been completely proprietary instead of built on LDAP it probably would've been just as successful.
