Perhaps "for no good reason" would be a better way of putting it.
I think the record profits would be very good reasons. Using "Drill Baby, Drill" as a campaign slogan was not a pointless turn of phrase. Also, the world's largest proven oil reserves, which happen to be in Venezuela, are now de facto controlled and refined in... the US. Lucky coincidence?
