Your confusion is understandable as Americans use a different political spectrum scale (i.e. Americans have their own political labelling system) - outside America, anyone would scoff, and even laugh, at the claim that the Democratic Party in the US is supposed to be the "left". (For the rest of the world, both the Democratic party and the Republican Party are centre-right parties, with current Trump administration leaning even more to the right- ...).
