The current US government is trying to create a narrative where America is under siege from a shadowy army of foreign left-wing forces.
In particular, this aligns with several of Umberto Eco's fourteen properties of Ur-Fascism[1]:
4. Disagreement is treason
7. Obsession with a plot
8. The enemy is at the same time too strong and too weak.
