There seems to be a few decent apps in F-droid and lots of stations with no ads and very specific genres like just depressive black metal!

Technobase.fm was my gateway drug to EDM when all I otherwise had access to was rock and roll and country.
There used to be Neradio as well, but they died like a decade ago.
