I'd be hesitant to give a gas station app ACH access to my checking account. I guess you could open a second account and just transfer enough there to cover your purchases but that's a bit of a nuisance.

I'd be hesitant to give any app any sort of access to my checking account. I would only do so with a second account with just enough there to cover my purchase. While it is a nuisance, the phone is simply too large of an attack vector to consider anything else.
I hope to move to Mercury Bank soon, which allows you to create a (practically) unlimited number of checking accounts without additional verification, including for cases just like these. Just need to find another job to afford the fee ($240/yr)
Check the rates! If 3.5% beats your current savings rate, and your balance is high enough, it might pay for itself.
In what scenario is Sunoco going to try to steal all my money?
I'm more concerned about sunoco getting a data leak and now my bank information is compromised...
I don't even use my debit card for anything, it all goes on a credit card because it's a lot easier to fight a fraudulent charge.
It doesn't have to be malicious. Some bug in their software causes them to withdraw all the money in that account, and you're SOL until that gets fixed. The amount of hassle on your end when they're not even going notice isn't worth the convenience, imo.
