You're exactly right. That is why you do not do business with an entity you do not trust outside your jurisdiction.
It's just that incidentally, "entity you do not trust outside your jurisdiction" also includes basically your average crypto peer.
Which is exactly why I ceased divulging all my credentials to KeePassXC and friends. And why I remain skeptical about Yubikey.
