The entire point of passkeys is to force DRM onto all corners of the web. It lets sites require attestation of the software running on the client device. Once they use that to eliminate hardware and operating system competition, they’ll ramp up surveillance and censorship even higher than current windows levels.
Passkeys are the second prong of the age verification push.
If you want more evidence, read up on Project 2025’s plans for forcing the internet to adhere to American Christian Nationalist values, then try to figure out how that could work in the absence of passkeys.
Yeah I think the OP is being naive about the risk here.
I do not think there is adequate reason to believe that FIDO Alliance members are supporters of Project 2025.
There is plenty adequate reason to believe that they are authoritarian assholes hellbent on stripping users of control, though. Scroll up a bit and read about the KeypassXC incident, and tell me that is the stance of an organization with user empowerment as an even distant value.
The fact that the attestation field exists at all is damning proof that they made overt plans to move in that direction. Passkeys are the mark of the beast, friends don't let friends use Passkeys, etc., etc.
I think there are a number of people who mean well that aren't aware that they are creating the means for state control of computing.
