Why would it need to remain one item of hardware? It could even be a KVM VM that you set up to be 'portable' between different hardware platforms. A bitcoin wallet and full node in a Linux environment is just files on a filesystem, you can move it between systems as you upgrade. Take backups however you want to. Or make your own cold storage copy of it, etc.
