They are insecure and want to appear smart, and think long writing == smart.

To be contrarian isn't to be a "free thinker", it's to be led around like a dog on a leash. You're just a reactionary saying the opposite of an actual opinion.

If I had to wager, I'd say both of those points stem from being bullied in school more often than not.
