> A lot of us are preconditioned from birth to trust our clinicians.

As a Asian, this is really fascinating to me. We, in general, are conditioned exactly the opposite. We don't trust our doctors, govt or anyone other than our immediate family. Taking a second opinion is just normal. As someone who now lives in the "west", and is now taking a second opinion for a condition, my doctor here was almost offended when I asked for a copy of my results in order to take a second opinion.

That's really cool and surprising to me. I always expect Asians to be very "lawful" and rule following and trust authority. Glad I was wrong on this one.

High trust society vs low / zero trust society.

Sadly, most Western countries are hellbent on degenerating to low trust societies.

  • Seems like an odd place to put this comment when second opinions are essentially low trust behavior which is seen as a good.

    • > when second opinions are essentially low trust behavior

      Which confirms my point.

      > which is seen as a good

It absolutely is not. As a patient, I shouldn't have to bear the mental load and financial expenses of having to get second or third opinions because apparently, doctors can't do that on their own or make sure they stay on top of academic research. And certainly not with a confirmed diagnosis of cancer.
