FINALLY! When I was in 3rd grade (1977), I checked out a book at the school library about the year 2000 and what the world would be like.

I vividly remember reading we were all supposed to have flying cars by the year 2000. I was so excited and looked forward to the future. As the early 90's approached, it was obvious, NOBODY would have flying cars. Better late than never...

I think my brother had a subscription to Quest magazine that had all manner of forecasts and predictions and I remember it having an article about a flying capsule that was part of a car that would fly away from an accident and avoid the accident. It was utter nonsense.

Tomorrow's World on the BBC also was chock full of this.

And Back To The Future II was set in the future (which is now our past) and had flying cars.

I think people are a bit over-optimistic, wanting flying cars for no known reason. People can't manage in 2 dimensions (x and y) so why on earth you'd give them the z dimension too and expect them to get it right is beyond me.
