This is what sanitizers do.","comments":[{"id":50186291,"user":"hyperhello","time":1792611054,"time_ago":"a day ago","type":"comment","content":"

I know compilers have advanced, but I was wondering about a runtime debug check.","comments":[{"id":50186520,"user":"chuckadams","time":1792611892,"time_ago":"a day ago","type":"comment","content":"

A sanitizer is that runtime debug check. The compiler just inserts those checks.","comments":[{"id":50186580,"user":"hyperhello","time":1792612092,"time_ago":"a day ago","type":"comment","content":"

Okay. Then I have to assume that they didn't do it for SimCity! Thanks.","comments":[{"id":50186664,"user":"chuckadams","time":1792612422,"time_ago":"a day ago","type":"comment","content":"

Sanitizers come with a lot of overhead, and the tech wasn't readily available in SimCity's day, certainly not for Windows 95.","comments":[{"id":50186892,"user":"hyperhello","time":1792613269,"time_ago":"a day ago","type":"comment","content":"

I was imagining more like some kind of primitive CPU mode that sends every single RAM request to a software exception. Something you would normally have turned off but available for truly heavy duty debugging.","comments":[{"id":50187457,"user":"chuckadams","time":1792615954,"time_ago":"a day ago","type":"comment","content":"

That sounds pretty similar to what Valgrind does, basically runs your program in a VM with that kind of instrumentation. The details of how it works are way past the boundaries of my own knowledge though :)","comments":[],"comments_count":0,"level":5,"url":"item?id=50187457"},{"id":50187360,"time":1792615426,"time_ago":"a day ago","type":"comment","content":"[deleted]","deleted":true,"comments":[],"comments_count":0,"level":5,"url":"item?id=50187360"},{"id":50189128,"user":"jeffbee","time":1792625736,"time_ago":"a day ago","type":"comment","content":"

The operating system could effect this by not providing any page tables to the CPU, so every memory reference faults and the OS has to handle them all.","comments":[],"comments_count":0,"level":5,"url":"item?id=50189128"}],"comments_count":3,"level":4,"url":"item?id=50186892"}],"comments_count":4,"level":3,"url":"item?id=50186664"}],"comments_count":5,"level":2,"url":"item?id=50186580"}],"comments_count":6,"level":1,"url":"item?id=50186520"}],"comments_count":7,"level":0,"url":"item?id=50186291"}],"comments_count":8,"url":"item?id=50186252"}
