Well you definitely missed that mark extremely badly here.

What would you have like to seen instead?

  • This is kind of like Apple with the iPhone. You need 3 model products max. 3 is easily understood and people can be bothered (if they care) to track the difference. More than 3 is a mix of being redolent of ADHD (viz bad PR) while also being annoying for consumers to track the difference.

I can’t tell you the difference between the 10 different versions of the current iPhone and I can’t you the difference between the 5-6 different models put out by the Anthropics/OpenAIs of the world. At this point I just try to track the flagship and then the cheapest one or worst case I just use the flagship.

I’m sure internally there’s data showing people want choice and options but decision fatigue is of course very real.

    • Very fair. There's always a tradeoff in the number of products, and it's hard to make everyone happy. My suspicion is that the optimal number is probably a bit higher for developers on our API (who often build their own internal evals) than for individual users (who don't want to waste time re-optimizing every month). We're excited by Terra's uniquely fast computer use, but if it traction is poor, maybe we'll go back to 3. It all depends on the market signal - we only want to ship models people find uniquely useful.
