I am not surprised. In one of the Ted Talks, Larry Page had clearly mentioned that he would rather leave all his money to someone like Elon Musk than donating to a Charity. He is going down that path.
I think this is a great move by Google.

If I were him, I would put most of my money in life extension technology.
I guess that's why he founded Calico (http://www.calicolabs.com/)
Bill Gates is working on that. He said in his AMA that one of his goal is to slow down aging.
And here it ain't even his own money. Even better for him.
